James Michael Tate runs the architecture practice T8projects and in 2013 co-organized On the Road in Los Angeles. He received a Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M University and a Master of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture where he was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal.

Tate was the 2014 – 2015 Willard A. Oberdick Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and has also completed fellowships at the Auburn University Rural Studio and Common Ground. In addition to teaching at the California College of Arts, he's taught at UC-Berkeley, University of Michigan, Rice University, and Woodbury University. In 2015 he was awarded the Donna M. Saltzer Award for Teaching Excellence at the University of Michigan. He has worked for Michael Maltzan Architecture, MOS Architecture, and Samuel Mockbee Architect.
