Zhang is well known for his large scale figurative clay sculpture with an international contemporary perspective, his style and characters are now both deeply influenced by Bay Area ceramic artists and the figurative movement in California. Zhang's works are enhance and enlarge clay content with new century path. As a studio artist and an educator, Zhang was the first place recipient of the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant in 2006 and Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors grant in 2004, His Ceramic sculptures have been shown around the nation, as well as abroad in Japan, China, and Canada. Zhang has many solo museum exhibitions, including at the University of Wyoming Art Museum, Fresno Art Museum in California, The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science & Art in Michigan, Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington, Holter Museum of Art in Montana, and others. Zhang's works collector are located both nationally and internationally.
