FINAR-604

Students in fieldwork/questing will explore the Bay Area and regions beyond, often with local artists, scientists, and historians. The goal of these adventures will be to think about how we experience and understand the outer landscape and related histories/terrains/ecologies and the connection to the inner landscape of the artist and potential audience. Starting in the immediate Bay Area, students will explore a variety of sites, including the San Francisco Bay Estuary, as well as take day trips out of the Bay Area, including a visit to the Ione Band of Miwok Indians in Amador County. Students will be accompanied by the writings of Joan Didion, Rebecca Solnit, and Barry Lopez. Research and storytelling will figure prominently both as we discover little known histories and as students embark on projects of their own. Students should expect to research and generate work and there will be time for critique. The results of these inquiries will be crafted into a final form as a group, i.e. a book/zine/map/etc.
