Joshua Tree: Ouija Board, the Sequel. During spring break, we will travel to Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California, spending 3 nights and 4 days exploring the Park and surrounding sites, which may include High Desert Test Sites' (HDTS) series of land art projects; Noah Purifoy's Outdoor Desert Art Museum; the Institute of Mentalphysics designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; and The Integratron Sound Baths, which is described as "an acoustically perfect tabernacle and energy machine sited on a powerful geomagnetic vortex in the magical Mojave Desert." The high desert landscape is shaped by climactic extremes resulting in fascinating, geological formations as well as speculative histories concerning UFO's and metaphysical conditions. We will examine ways in which artists and others have occupied and operated within this site, creating experiments in living, economies, community, land art and "outsider art" projects. In addition, we will star gaze at the vast desert night sky. Travel Dates: *Friday, March 22 - Monday, March 25. *Students must be able to arrive in Joshua Tree by Friday, March 22 because some sites we are visiting are only open on Saturday and Sunday. Students are responsible for cost of travel, room and board, and food.
