FINAR-604

Reality as we know it has become more like a work of fiction than ever before. This class will make the case that the genre we normally refer to as Science Fiction (but now reframed using the instructor's preferred term, "Speculative Fiction") is now one of the best lenses through which to assess our current situation. The course will survey a number of major and minor works of speculative fiction from the past century, both in print and in film, pairing these with a variety of non-fiction essays and writing on situations currently unfolding in the world. The course will lean heavily upon student participation and discussion. Along the way, we will continually consider how the various strategies and tropes of speculative fiction can translate into a useful set of tools for the contemporary artist.
