Behind many familiar typographic principles lie the logic and techniques of letterpress. In addition to acquainting students with the physical origins of these conventions, this studio will explore letterpress as a medium of direct graphic expression. From composition as construction to the aesthetic possibilities of inking and impression, we will seek in the processes of letterpress not only the pleasures of material involvement, but also the conceptual resources of technical knowledge. Beginning with the basics of typesetting and presswork, we will proceed by hands-on experimentation to test all manual and mechanical aspects of wood and metal composition, ink (and solvent) mixing, registration and over-printing, for their potential as stages in the production of graphic form and meaning.
