Typography 3: Information

The presentation of typographic information within the design of complex visuals such as maps, charts, diagrams, and navigations requires a tight focus on verbal content, typographic details, aesthetic consistency, how the communication will be used, and who its audience will be. This course answers the following questions: What are the graphic and typographic options for displaying information and data? What must the designer consider when choosing one form of information communication over another? (For example, why use a chart versus a table? Why choose one specific kind of chart over another?) How can the designer maximize legibility and access to complex visual information through the use of rigorously considered and consistent typography? How does an information-dense, prose-free communication live as a design element within its broader context (i.e., within the book, web applications, or the built environment)? Throughout the semester, we will have in-class presentations by designers whose practice focuses on the communication of information. Corequisites: Graphic Design 3
