Historically, posters have been illustrated by some of the finest artists of their time, from Toulouse-Lautrec to Milton Glaser. This course will examine the poster through image and typography, to communicate an idea, an event or a cause. Students will produce at least seven finished pieces during the semester. Poster topics will run a spectrum from performance announcements, cause, or protest posters, celebratory promotions, and anything else that can be explored on paper. The students will also produce reports on poster artists or movements of their choosing. Included will be several discussions on the history and theory of typography and lettering.
