IS: Urban Mobility/Utility

Investigative Studios are required studios within the Industrial Design Program that are also open to students in other majors. Investigative studios are taken in any order. Content, structure, and focus of these studios varies from semester to semester. Students can sign up for the studios that best fit their schedules and interests. Investigative Studios fulfill an Industrial Design Investigative Studio requirement or a Studio Elective requirement.

This course is structured around the dual concerns of learning about the technical concepts of making a bicycle, and the associated metal and shop work involved in that process, as well as approaching the design problem of creating a ?utility bicycle for modern living". In this course, students will learn the hand and machine shop tools and skills necessary to work with metal, learning the basics of oxy-acetylene torch work and metal joinery techniques to create a permanent bond between materials, and learning the engineering fundamentals to a properly functioning bicycle. The explanation of the use of jigs, fixtures, precision measurement, and alignment will be covered. While you learn how to cut and shape metal, and join it through hot techniques, you will be simultaneously pursuing the design investigation of the studio. Following the prompt of the Oregon Manifest project, we will be working on designs for creating a "utility bicycle for modern living". Through investigative exercises we will come up with designs for an urban mobilitymachine, addressing the concerns of functionality, aesthetics, with regards to pragmatic and performance characteristics - weight, ride quality, ease of use, loads, and safety. You will betasked to design and build full integrated systems for the bicycle platform we are developing. We are designing machines fora global urbanity - but what role will these machines take? How will they look? What roles will they fulfill? We will seek to create a synthesis between the functional and the beautiful - bicycles that are flexible and adaptable to the needs and concerns of the contemporary city dweller.
