Our students benefit from the sponsored studios offered throughout the year. Studios sponsored by globally distinguished firms such as Gensler and IDEO offer students the opportunity to work directly with practitioners from some of the leading design firms practicing today.
In fall 2006, IDEO sponsored the course Lifecycle, the primary goal of which was to familiarize students with the firm's collaborative, multidisciplinary, human-centered design practice. Urban waste disposal was the vehicle for understanding that practice.
Students had to balance multiple, competing, and often contradictory needs and constraints, which is the essence of a real-world design challenge. Why do people consume certain objects? How do we design for consumption? What are the economics of waste? What are the ripple effects of changing one aspect of the process?

Design Within Reach: Production Furniture Design
Also in fall 2006, the Interior Design Program teamed up with furniture retailer Design Within Reach to inspire a new generation of furniture designers.
The curriculum was developed through a collaboration between adjunct professor Brian Kane, an award-winning furniture designer, and DWR executives, who provided guidance to students throughout the semester.
