This class will explore "how places are planned, designed, built, inhabited, appropriated, celebrated, despoiled, and discarded," as Dolores Hayden has described urban cultural landscapes. Our focus will be on historical as well as contemporary cultural landscapes in San Francisco, including those shaped by gender, sexuality, national origin, race and class. Assigned case study readings and theoretical work from cultural, landscape, and urban studies will support group and individual research projects as we look closely at how the meaning of these landscapes is linked to cultural, economic and social issues.
