Primeval Intersection: Performance Art

This course is a performative approach to understanding otherness and the assimilation of individual and collective differences within ourselves and others.

Using the human body as a medium of expression and departing from contemporary socio-cultural stereotypes, students re-invent, develop, and perform individual personas with original traits. Through the use of movement, introspection archetype, psychology and time-based techniques, participants identify their limits regarding identity, stereotype, context, time, territory, and personal space. Please note that this is a performance class, so students need to be willing and ready for “show time.” (3 credits)

This course satisfies the Diversity Studies Studio requirement, a Sculpture Workshop requirement or a Studio Elective.

Painting/Drawing Intensive: Strategies and Dialogues in Contemporary Art

June 2-July 10 (no class 7/3), Mon./Wed./Thurs., 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

In this studio course, each student has their own “senior” studio space in which to work during the six weeks of the class.

This course combines traditional drawing methods with an experimental approach. Whatever shape or form a student’s art will take by the time it is “finished,” it first passes through a “mode of drawing.” That is, experimenting in using every type of dry/wet media, learning to see an object/figure, opening up the limits of the imagination about a known/unknown subject or concept, and exploring ideas through multiple processes/view points. Students learn to visualize their thoughts and ideas through the development of perception and extensive exploration of the language of drawing/painting.

The class clarifies and articulates the various stages in the evolution of ideas and formal issues essential to all disciplines. This provides the confidence to investigate a wide range of visual and conceptual ideas. Students examine the effective use of humour, satire, popular culture, biography, and narrative, while learning how to draw on source and research to support these strategies. While the source concentrates on topics such as diversity and popular culture, students also learn different techniques to achieve individual goals. This is a course for adventurous students from all majors!

Students who take this course for diversity studio credit also investigate minority theory and cultural identity issues. This separate track shares in the main conceptual and technical pursuits of the class and includes readings from Bell Hooks. (3 credits)

This course satisfies Beginning or Intermediate Painting, the Diversity Studies Studio requirement, or a Studio Elective.
