The novel calls for a mix of endurance and alchemy, and deserves its own workshop design. This course will combine the collaborative critique of the workshop setting with theelongated process of novel writing. You and your fellownovelists will read large chunks of each other's work, 30-60pages at a time. Through these long excerpts, your classmates will get a strong sense of the world you're creating, and will be able to comment effectively on such crucial elements as character development, story arc and pacing. You will do slow and thorough readings of 2-3 exemplary published novels, focusing each week on a specific area of long-form craft. Class sessions will include writing exercises that implement thesecraft principles.
