The Autobiographical Novel

« Back to course listings

This seminar explores the thin line between Fiction and the real life of the writer. We will read the work of novelists from diverse backgrounds who have written works of fiction based in episodes from their own lives. While there is a general consensus among critics that the personal lives of writers should not be taken into consideration while judging their work, it is very hard to argue that many novelists do not borrow from their own personal experiences to create characters, settings, and situations to render a story. We will read works by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, Amos Oz, Marguerite Duras, and others.
