WRLIT-304

This seminar explores the ways in which American identity is investigated by a variety of fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, and filmmakers. For most Americans this identity is an unquestionable given; for others, usually immigrants and their American children, to be an American implies a transformation - the result of a process of negotiation with the culture outside of the boundaries of the familiar home. We will delve into the work of these writers and filmmakers to understand the larger issue of assimilation as we examine the relationship between official identity and the mutual willingness of acceptance.
