WSW: English Second Language
A language class intended for non-native speakers of English who need more attention to the building blocks of college level reading, writing and speaking. Language exercises will be geared toward the issues of non-native speakers, such as: vocabulary development, idioms, subject-verb agreement, sequence of tenses and sentence structure. Discussion will be based on short articles on intercultural issues, works of literature and art-related essays. Verbal skills and accent reduction will be addressed through oral presentations such as art critiques and debates. Students will receive individualized instruction outside of class from the instructor, the teaching assistant and tutors. Students may receive 3 units of Humanities and Sciences elective credit if this course is successfully passed, including passing the English Placement Examination in the course.
