Free and open to the public.

The public art project Pledges of Allegiance was organized by Creative Time, a New York–based nonprofit organization committed to working with artists on contemporary dialogues, debates, and dreams. The project invites cultural institutions to participate in raising flags created by acclaimed contemporary artists to inspire community and conversation while supporting artists at the forefront of socially engaged art-making.

A new flag will be hung at the entryway of CCA’s main entrance courtyard in San Francisco each month starting in November. Each of the fourteen flags identifies an issue the artist is passionate about and will provide opportunities for dialogue about pressing contemporary topics. The artists represented are Alex Da Corte, Jeremy Deller, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ann Hamilton, Robert Longo, Josephine Meckseper, Vik Muniz, Jayson Musson, Ahmet Ögüt, Yoko Ono, Trevor Paglen, Pedro Reyes, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Nari Ward.

Pedro Reyes offers the flag of the pUN, People’s United Nations, an experimental conference that applies tools and resources from social psychology, theater, art, and conflict resolution to geopolitics. Unlike the real UN, the people’s UN welcomes individuals who are connected by family ties or birth to the nations represented at the UN. Pedro Reyes was born in Mexico City in 1972. He has won international attention for large-scale projects that address current social and political issues. Through a varied practice utilizing sculpture, performance, video, and activism, Reyes explores the power of individual and collective organization to incite change through communication, creativity, happiness, and humor.
