Congratulations, Class of 2021

Celebrating CCA’s 114th commencement class with videos, virtual events, online displays, and more.

How to Celebrate

Tams off for a job well done!

To commence means to begin, to start something new. There’s no doubt that CCA’s Class of 2021, as they start their professional practice, will rise to the new challenges of a pandemic-shuttered world. But first, we celebrate the momentous scholarly achievement they began years ago with events designed to foster a sense of togetherness, despite our distance:

1 – Prepare. Access the digital DIY Commencement Kit (to complement the mailed kit) for celebration with GIFs, Zoom and AR filters, and more.

2 – Watch. Join us for an interactive viewing of the 2021 Commencement Video on Monday, May 10, at 11 am PT.

3 – Celebrate. See your name on screen in the divisional celebration videos with remarks by your dean, recognition of each student, and the conferral of degrees by President Stephen Beal.

The 2021 Commencement Video, emceed by Juhnay Arabesque, includes artist performances; community reflections; and formal speeches by President Stephen Beal, Honorary Doctorate Sir Jony Ive, a distinguished alum, and undergraduate and graduate student speakers.

If you have trouble accessing this video, watch on Panopto (CCA login required). Questions? Visit our FAQ on Portal.

Note: A recording of the Commencement Video will be available to watch and share after the May 10 viewing party. Stay tuned.

Divisional celebration videos

Commemorate the moment with your dean

In addition to the 2021 Commencement Video, CCA’s four academic division videos feature remarks from the deans and the official conferral of degrees by President Stephen Beal, as the names of each graduating student display on screen.

There are two ways to watch these videos with your friends and family: on Vimeo with an invitation password sent via email, or on Panopto (globally accessible) with a CCA login.

“We’ll look back at this moment and see a demarcation: the time before COVID–19 and the time after. Our task, our responsibility, is to imagine the after. We’ll need intelligence, vision, and a lot of heart to get there.” — Dean Keith Krumwiede

“Your experience as students over the last 18 months has been a lot different than what any of us thought art and design school could ever be. This is a time of great change, great challenge, and, I believe, great opportunity for graduates trained to think differently. That’s you.” — Dean Helen Maria Nugent

“As storytellers, healers, disruptors, bridge builders, and caregivers, you are finding your roles in larger ecosystems of social change. The emergent strategies, radical imagination, and critical resistance you’ve practiced at CCA will be a guiding compass navigating the way forward.” — Dean Allison Smith

“Now more than ever, we need your critical insight and will rely upon your creative energy to envision new ways of being during these rapidly changing times. … You are lifelong members of our community and we will always be here to support and cheer you on.” — Dean Tina Takemoto

Honor the Class of 2021

Craft commencement at home

This year’s commencement experience is in the spirit of a collective gathering, but with the opportunity for asynchronous and distanced celebration. In other words, we’re bringing the ceremony to you. These public and private virtual events offer time to be in community with one another, even though we’re distributed all around the world.

Each graduating student received a DIY kit in the mail to complete the ceremonial look with a tam—a uniquely CCA tradition—and a special-edition silver stole and tassel; the color represents this unique moment and the “silver linings” we’ve created together as a community despite a global pandemic. Virtual announcements, Zoom backgrounds, social media filters, and more celebratory items are also available on Portal.

Class of 2021 by the numbers

A look at the graduating students, representing 22 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs in the CCA Class of 2021:

  • Youngest graduate: 21
  • Oldest graduate: 61
  • Countries represented: 9
  • U.S. states represented: 27
  • First-generation college students: 147

Class of 2021 Showcase

Explore student work from across the college

The Class of 2021 Showcase demonstrates an expansive range of culminating projects and capstone moments by students graduating from the college’s four divisions: Architecture, Design, Fine Arts, and Humanities & Sciences.

A dark blue graphic that reads Deans’ Spotlight with multicolored vertical stripes of different widths.

To denote outstanding student contributions to the Class of 2021 Showcase, the deans of CCA’s four academic divisions selected students whose submissions deserve special recognition. Every student work chosen for a Deans’ Spotlight demonstrates excellence in theory and practice.

Virtual events

Experience our end-of-year events and presentations, modified to accommodate socially distanced idea sharing and community building. In these spaces you’ll find lectures, readings, digital collections, and more. All are evidence of the scope of students’ intellectual curiosity and creative action, as well as the outcomes of CCA’s dynamic learning-through-making educational model.

Take a page out of this book 📖

Emily Garcia (MFA Writing 2022) made this accordion book in Michael Wertz's (@wertzateria) FORMING IDEAS class during Fall 2021. Inspired by the author William S. Bourroughs, it's made out of cut-ups of the student's own work. "I'm a fiction writer working on a collection of short stories. This class is all about playing with form and learning to make different books and book objects. I've never had more fun expanding and playing with the written word."

We're proud to announce that CCA has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This grant is for visual artist and #CCAalum Christine Wong Yap (BFA Printmaking 1998, MFA Printmaking 2007) to serve as our 2022 Creative Citizenship Fellow.

The project includes researching and recording stories of resilience by recent immigrants through a partnership with Lee Newcomer Elementary School, a school for Mandarin-speaking, newly arrived immigrant students, located in San Francisco’s Chinatown. These interviews will inform the creation of a series of mixed-media portraits that will be showcased in a solo exhibition at the CCA Hubbell Street Galleries.

Congratulations, @ccaexhibitions and @christinewongyap!

Celebrating 280 undergraduate degrees

Cooper Berella

“We all come from different parts of the world, from different walks of life, and from different creative disciplines. To my classmates and professors, you have taught me to integrate inclusivity, social issues, and calls to action in my illustrations. You’ve taught me that art is so much more than ‘creating cool stuff,’ but a way to show others what the world is—and what the world could be. Art is about giving people voices, whether it be your own or giving someone else a platform to speak. It doesn’t matter if you are an illustrator, graphic designer, filmmaker, writer, textile artist, anybody! Graduates, know that the valuable skills you’ve learned at CCA make a difference and that your voice matters.”

“As we leap off the springboard of CCA academics and onto the journey our lives may take us, know that the world is changing around us. Our commencement lies at the precipice of an era that is unfolding before our eyes and we, the Class of 2021, have an exceptional opportunity to take the lessons we have learned, principles we have developed, and compassion we have gained here at CCA into whatever professional discourses we engage with. We have spent the last few years cultivating our respective talents and nurturing our understanding of craft along with aspirations we strive to see out in the world.”
