SFGate: Comics prof creates a dream graphic grad program

Matt Silady wasn't into comics as a kid in Chicago until high school, when he gave in to a comic-book geek who'd been pushing Marvel's mutant superheroes on him. When he got to the last panel of his first X-Men, he immediately devoured the book again.

"It fired my brain," says Silady, the graphic novelist who runs the new MFA program in comics at California College of the Arts (CCA), apparently the first institution of higher learning on the West Coast to offer a graduate degree in the ancient art whose roguish tradition includes such distinguished practitioners as Honoré Daumier, Art Spiegelman and R. Crumb.
