Frieze magazine recently published an insightful profile on CCA alumna and painter Toyin Ojih Odutola titled Unselfconscious is the New Black for Emerging Artists of Colour. Ojih Odutola’s portraits of a fictional aristocratic Nigerian family push toward an expanded definition of the ‘black experience.’ Distinct from her contemporaries, such as Kehinde Wiley, her work focuses on scenes both bourgeois and banal. Ojih Odutola’s paintings are currently on view in Toyin Ojih Odutola: Testing the Name at SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia.
