"Global trade and labor inequities have had a strong sway on politically based contemporary art, and I'd say some of the artists in the show were dealing with that," says Helfand, who also teaches at California College of the Arts and Mills. "I'm really viewing the show as more of an emptying out of an idea.

Kate studied at the California College of the Arts, and was hired on graduation day by Microsoft who immediately embedded her on their design team for the Surface. They had spotted her potential and encouraged that, and it’s cool to see someone talented given the opportunity to shine. Kate recently designed a skull embellished cover for the Surface, inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, and Microsoft let her run with it.

Graphic designer Matthew Lew likes concerts, but he hates concert tickets. A student from California College of the Arts, Lew was dismayed by the poor standard of design of tickets, both from an aesthetic and usability perspective. Rather than simply complain about it, he set about creating "a redesign worthy enough to keep paper tickets in circulation."

The designer behind the One Laptop Per Child Project, Yves Behar is truly a world-class designer, balancing aesthetics, function, and socially-based initiatives. Founder and principal designer of FuseProject, he also happens to be the Chair of the Industrial Design Department at San Francisco’s California College of the Arts. Recently, he facilitated a design studio in which Industrial Design students partnered with South Korean cell phone manufacturer Pantech to design new cell-phone models, taking on the future of mobile communications and addressing the idea of emotional networking.

On October 10, 2013, CCA hosted an OpenCo session, an event that announces itself as “a mix between a business conference and artist’s open studio with the vibe of a music festival.”

OpenCo launched in 2012 in San Francisco and has since expanded to four cities. At this year’s San Francisco edition, more than 3,600 attendees -- investors, marketers, job seekers, and curious neighbors -- visited 135 different companies and organizations, getting direct access to local innovation leaders in, you might say, their natural habitat.

Over the weekend of November 16-17, 2013, 24 CCA undergraduates participated in Wheel Well, a “design sprint” for bicycle safety in Silicon Valley.

Organized by Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition’s Roadway Safety Solutions Team, CCA’s Center for Art and Public Life, and CCA’s Design division, the event challenged students to rapidly conceive an intervention that would: 1) improve the relationship between motorists and cyclists in Silicon Valley; and 2) encourage behavior change to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

This book by Maria Giudice (Design and MBA in Design Strategy faculty) and Christopher Ireland (Design faculty) explores the intersection of creative talent and business expertise, explaining how and why this unlikely coupling produces leaders most capable of solving our increasingly complex business problems.

The two authors have more than 30 years of collective experience as creative business leaders. They conceive of this effort as a playbook designed to unlock creativity in a traditional executive or teach a creative professional how to become an effective business leader. The perfect jump shot

The new Autodesk workshop at Pier 9 feels like a mad scientist’s lab, despite the bright sunlight coming in the windows, reflected off the San Francisco Bay. Before entering, everyone must put on protective eyewear and sign an extensive release form. “Spooky” comes to mind when you see the large, dark gray machinery, weighing multiple tons, lurking in all corners.

Between her responsibilities running a thriving nonprofit and being the single mom of an 11-year-old daughter, Kelly Rodriguez (Architecture 1997) is always working: to support her family, enrich her community, and improve the world at large. And she wouldn't have it any other way.

Rodriguez is the executive director of ARCADE, a Seattle-based nonprofit that promotes multidisciplinary dialogues centering on the integration of architecture, design, culture, science, the arts, and everything in between. It publishes a quarterly magazine, coordinates cultural events for the community, and maintains an increasingly robust web and social media presence.

A glance at ARCADE's calendar reveals a bevy of options offered weekly for anyone interested in design, architecture, and the arts, from lectures by visiting scholars to documentary film screenings and info nights featuring free tutorials on design software.
