Anthony Huberman Named Director of CCA Wattis Institute

Anthony Huberman, director of The Artist’s Institute in New York, has been named the new director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, it was announced today by Stephen Beal, president of California College of the Arts (CCA).

Huberman will be responsible for the development and presentation of exhibitions and public programs in venues on CCA’s San Francisco campus, including the college’s new facility on Kansas Street, which includes the Logan Galleries and a dynamic event space. Huberman will start at CCA in August 2013.

Huberman succeeds Jens Hoffmann, who was director of the CCA Wattis Institute from November 2006 to November 2012. Hoffmann recently was appointed a deputy director at the Jewish Museum in New York.

Laura Hazlett appointed senior vice president for finance and administration

Stephen Beal, president of California College of the Arts (CCA), announced today the appointment of Laura Hazlett, PhD, as senior vice president (SVP) for finance and administration. Hazlett is currently chief financial officer (CFO) for Athletics at the University of California, Berkeley, a position she has held since 2009.

The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts will begin the year 2013 in a new exhibition space. It has departed from its current location on Eighth Street in San Francisco and is moving its Kent and Vicki Logan Galleries to a building recently acquired by CCA at 360 Kansas Street (between 16th and 17th Streets). The building, newly renovated by the architect Mark Jensen, contains galleries as well as event space. The event space will be used by the Wattis and CCA.

The first shows in the new galleries, opening January 22, 2013, are Claire Fontaine: Redemptions; and an exhibition of Werner Herzog's Hearsay of the Soul, titled The Way Beyond Art 4: Infinite Screens.

San Francisco, October 22, 2012: California College of the Arts announces the launch of three groundbreaking new graduate programs: the Master of Architecture in Urban Design and Landscape (MAUDL)*, the MFA in Comics, and the MFA in Film. The MFA in Comics will begin its first classes in summer 2013. The MAUDL program and the MFA in Film welcome their first students in fall 2013. All three begin accepting applications on November 15, 2012, at The deadline to apply is January 5, 2013.

Sandrine Lebas, chair of CCA's Industrial Design Program

Sandrine Lebas, creative director at the San Francisco firm LUNAR, has been appointed chair of the Industrial Design Program at California College of the Arts (CCA). The undergraduate program is one of the largest programs at the college with approximately 155 students.

Lebas was selected after an intensive international search. Previous chairs of the program have included fuseproject founder Yves Béhar and design scholar and CCA Distinguished Professor Steven Holt.

Lebas commented, “Drawing from 15 years of core industrial design experience in the Bay Area and Europe, I am thrilled to become a key contributor of the CCA design community. The craft assets of the college resonate with my design beliefs of thinking and making, allowing students to develop their own design voice through experimentation and creative intuition.”

San Francisco, Calif., August 8, 2012--The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts will present the exhibition When Attitudes Became Form Become Attitudes: A Restoration / A Remake / A Rejuvenation / A Rebellion (script and display by Jens Hoffmann, based upon an original exhibition by Harald Szeemann) September 13 through December 1, 2012, in the Wattis Institute galleries, located on the San Francisco campus of California College of the Arts. The exhibition is free and open to the public, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 13, from 7-9 p.m.

The exhibition is a sequel to, and reevaluation of, the legendary 1969 exhibition When Attitudes Become Form, curated by Harald Szeemann at the Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland. The new show brings together 82 international contemporary artists who follow, in various ways, the legacy of Szeemann’s iconic exhibition. The artists will present both existing and newly commissioned works. The show will also bring together archival material, floor plans, and installation images from the 1969 show. This new exhibition does not make a distinction between what is past and what is present, but rather considers When Attitudes Become Form as a living past.

Mara Hancock appointed CIO

Mara Hancock has been appointed to the position of chief information officer (CIO) at California College of the Arts (CCA), it was announced today by CCA President Stephen Beal. As the senior technology officer of the college, she will lead the Educational Technology Services (ETS) division, which is responsible for the support of faculty, students, and staff in their use of technology; the acquisition and support of academic and administrative applications; and the design, installation, and maintenance of CCA’s networking, telecommunications, and web infrastructure. She will oversee a staff of 30 and manage a budget of $2.5 million. Hancock comes to CCA from University of California, Berkeley, where she holds the concurrent positions of director of educational technology services, director of online learning, and associate CIO for academic engagement. She will begin at CCA on September 1, 2012.

President Beal commented, “CCA has experienced tremendous growth in the last 10 years, adding several new academic programs and increasing enrollment by more than 500 students. We are now at a critical juncture where strategic leadership is needed to meet the growing technology needs of our evolving institution. Mara will have a tremendous opportunity to lead and support a new era of technological planning and innovation at CCA. Her extensive experience in academic technology will serve us very well. I am particularly pleased and proud that Mara is a CCA alumna; she received her BFA here in 1986. Having forged a highly successful career in institutional technology, she is a wonderful example of where an education in the arts can lead.”

The Fashion Design Program at California College of the Arts is pleased to announce the Annual Fashion Show 2012, which will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012, at CCA’s San Francisco campus (1111 Eighth Street, at 16th and Wisconsin). The show features 13 new collections created by CCA’s senior Fashion Design students, juried by industry professionals and worn by runway models. General-admission tickets are $40. VIP tickets are $100 and include admission to the pre-party at 6:30 p.m. and preferred seating at the event.

“At CCA, we encourage each individual designer to develop a thesis collection that reflects their aesthetic perspective and artistic innovation,” remarks CCA Fashion Design Program chair Amy Williams. “This year, the ‘aha’ moments of the senior cohort were exceptionally sure and true. The results are 13 distinct, individual, highly innovative collections! I can hardly wait for the public to meet these outstanding emerging talents. Best-selling author and NPR humorist David Sedaris will appear at a special benefit reading for California College of the Arts (CCA) on May 3, 2012, at Zellerbach Auditorium on the UC Berkeley campus. The evening will include a reading from new and unpublished material, a book signing, and, for sponsorship donors, a VIP cocktail party with the author at Berkeley Art Museum. Proceeds will benefit the CCA Scholarship Fund.
