California College of the Arts hosted its annual fashion show on May 15 at CCA’s San Francisco campus, where 13 senior design students showcased their final collections for a crowd of about 750 guests.

“Valencia-based CalArts, co-founded by Walt Disney, has seen the gender divide widen in women's favor every year since 2010. The Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia grew its female animation student body by 82% between 2010 and 2014, whereas the number of male students grew by 11%. At California College of the Arts in San Francisco, female enrollment in animation grew by about 20% during the same period.”

California College of the Arts’ Graduate Program in Fine Arts 2015 MFA Thesis Show on view from May 14 through the 23rd in the Nave of its San Francisco campus was an exciting culmination of fifty candidates’ journeys to achieve a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from one of California’s most prestigious schools of higher education in the practice and study of the arts.

Going to California College of the Arts every year for the graduation fashion show is tremendously exciting. Wondering whether the tent would survive the ridiculously strong wind by the end of the night is always part of the experience of California College of the Arts student fashion show. When some photographers were nervous about falling lights and the videographer looked a little unsure, that’s when you know the wind was especially lively this year. But just like every other year, the California College of the Arts 2015 Fashion Show went off swimmingly.

"Traditionally, a lot of comics and graphic novels — a predecessor to animation — were more geared to boys," says Bret Parker, Pixar animator and professor at the Bay Area's California College of the Arts. "That's shifted. Now young women are realizing animation is an accessible thing they can go into."

The CCA fashion department’s capstone event features collections by 13 senior Fashion Design student  juried by industry professionals and showcased by professional models, in a runway presentation that has become a staple in the college’s lineup of annual events. The program’s focus on sustainability in fashion makes it one of the more socially conscious student fashion shows in the world.

Meanwhile, at CCA, the show is made up of 13 undergrads who are chosen to participate by a jury of industry professionals. the program is known for their dedication to sustainability, recently being named the top program of its kind in the world by Fahsionista. It's my first time at the CCA show, and i'm excited to see what the designers have in store.
