"It may sound strange to say it, but I think of my Nigerian heritage as sort of a catalyst for my work--to challenge, create and emphasize new narratives, subjectivities, and contradictions. . There's an ambivalence I feel towards it: On the one hand, my history and lineage, are an immense source of pride and personal strength; on the other hand, I know that I am not completely beholden to it. I can progress forward with it, looking at it as a forward, or in some cases, as a prologue. I can hold it dear and/or utilize it to create new experiences and work."
