Sponsored studios offer industry partners an infusion of fresh ideas from next-generation designers and CCA students access to real-world design challenges. A great benefit of sponsored studios is the exchange of ideas and energy between CCA students and faculty, and industry professionals.
Past sponsors have included Pantech, IDEO, PPR, Gensler, and Design Within Reach, among others.
CCA’s Industrial Design students partnered with the South Korean cell phone manufacturer Pantech Company, Ltd. for a sponsored studio course in which they took on the future of mobile communications.
Addressing the idea of emotional networking, CCA Industrial Design faculty member Yves Béhar worked with CCA students and their counterparts in South Korea to develop cell phone prototypes for the company.
The results included such designs as the Kristina Lee's Inhealth phone, which encourages exercise and uses NASA's Enose technology to track dietary needs, and the Nike+ phone, which uses social networking technology to allow users to compete with each other during a run in real time.

During a partnership with IDEO, CCA students investigated four pillars of design: experience, sustainability, meaning, and business needs. They were challenged to apply their learning to the air-travel experience from the perspectives of the traveler, airline, and employee of the airport and airline.
Working collaboratively, students presented their concept for Home Baggage Check-In service, designed by David Bauer and Justin Butler to designers from IDEO and greatly benefited from interaction with the designers, who shared aspects of their own research processes and participated in critiques throughout the semester.
