Lisel Ashlock

BFA Illustration, 2002

Illustrator/designer/art director Lisel Ashlock has developed a broad client list, from high-circulation magazines as GQ, Spin, Out, and Playboy and media corporations such as Sony, the New York Times, and The Weinstein Group (The King's Speech) to retail giants Abercrombie & Fitch and Sephora.

Her most notable accomplishment to date was creating the book cover art and design for My Escapee, by Corinna Vallianatos (Penguin Books). She also provided artwork for Jon Stewart's Earth (Pentagram).

Ashlock also recently completed an assignment for the design firm Stranger & Stranger, where she worked with its designers to create a custom wine label for client VML Winery.

She has no regrets about her education: "The Illustration Program at CCA is incredible. It’s so well rounded and thorough with a great balance of technique, concept, and the business aspects of illustration. Assignments span every type of project you could get as a professional, and the encouragement to explore different mediums is amazing.

"At the same time, faculty are always making sure each student has a very strong core in the basics of drawing and painting."

She credits the late CCA Illustration chair Dugald Stermer for much of her inspiration. "Long after graduation he continued to be a constant support and source of motivation and inspiration. Other important mentors: Robert Hunt, Barron Storey, and Mark Eanes.

Brynn Metheney

BFA Illustration, 2009

Brynn Metheney currently works with Keep A Breast, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help eradicate breast cancer. She is working on a piece for the upcoming Love show in Tokyo this summer.

"The Illustration Program strives to nurture relationships between students as well as the instructors," Metheney explains. "I was very fortunate to be part of a tight-knit class. ... Having a group of colleagues and friends to reach out to after graduation has been invaluable in keeping me motivated to work."

In 2011 Metheney's work was accepted into the Spectrum 18: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. She has also been featured in a variety of art-related magazines and annuals: Uppercase magazine, Brazilian magazine Contém Glúten, Imagine FX magazine, and Exotique 7.

Clients include Wired magazine, Studio Hinrichs, Fantasy Flight Games, Sugar Publishing, and Dark Horse Comics. In 2011 Metheney was hired by the French film studio EuropaCorp to work on a special project.

Metheney was hired by Studio Hinrichs to contribute to the Sappi Standard, an educational promotion that focuses on special printing techniques for professionals in print communications. This particular edition partnered with 826 National, a nonprofit organization that focuses on tutoring students in reading and writing.
