Architectural Record selected the Meander, a western Marin County residence by longtime CCA architecture professor Neal Schwartz and his firm S^A, as one of its 2026 Record Houses.

Architectural Record’s John King profiles the Meander, a roughly 4,800-square-foot house by Neal Schwartz, a longtime CCA architecture professor who leads the San Francisco firm S^A | Schwartz and Architecture. Set on a 40-acre site about an hour north of San Francisco, the house takes its cues from the surrounding ridgelines and valleys. Three angled, cypress-clad volumes sit along a cascade of 35 granite steps, with planted roofs, framed views, and outdoor spaces that tie the building to the slope. Schwartz describes how a pause in the design process during the pandemic gave his team time to rethink how the house could settle into the land.
