A collaborative initiative between LoveFrom — the collective founded by Sir Jony Ive, former chief design officer of Apple — and CCA, Royal College of Art (RCA), as well as Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the new LoveFrom Scholarship supports diversity in design.

As a multidisciplinary creative collective of designers, architects, musicians, filmmakers, writers, engineers, and artists, LoveFrom is acutely aware of the lack of representation in the design industry and is committed to helping open paths to a design education. The new LoveFrom Scholarship expands access to the best design education in the world by sponsoring education for underrepresented undergraduate and postgraduate design students.

Three students have been awarded a scholarship funded through an endowment to each respective school, covering tuition and some living expenses toward the attainment of a degree. At CCA, one student will be supported for the length of their college career. Last fall, CCA welcomed our first LoveFrom recipient, an MFA Design Program student, majdah omer (they/we). As an artist and designer, they have expressed interest in exploring personal and collective practices of health, healing, and care. They value being in co-creative learning and work environments that center care, liberation, and connection.

“I have always admired the character of CCA and the tenacity and ingenuity it encourages in its students. We are very proud to be able to support diverse talent and excellence through the LoveFrom Scholarships, and share our ethos of insatiable curiosity and obsession with creating and making for a new generation of designers”

“This connection to and celebration of our local San Francisco art school feels so important,” says Sir Jony Ive. “I have always admired the character of CCA and the tenacity and ingenuity it encourages in its students. We are very proud to be able to support diverse talent and excellence through the LoveFrom Scholarships, and share our ethos of insatiable curiosity and obsession with creating and making for a new generation of designers.”

“This partnership means so much to CCA and our students, many of whom rely on scholarship support to attend college,” adds Helen Maria Nugent, dean of Design at CCA. “Sir Jony has talked about the need to increase educational opportunities and open the door to a career in design for talented students from underserved communities. I am grateful to him and his team for investing in CCA and increasing the diversity of our student body with this important scholarship.”

CCA is a leading art and design school in the United States. The college prepares students for lifelong creative work by cultivating innovation, community engagement, and social and environmental responsibility.

The college invests approximately $16 million annually in scholarships that specifically support the enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds. For more than 20 years, CCA has directed substantial institutional resources to this purpose. CCA also enrolls students from 42 countries and 43 states and is ranked among the top 25 most diverse colleges in the U.S. Among CCA’s current student body, 25% are the first in their families to attend college, 34% are eligible for Pell Grants, and 85% of students receive financial aid or scholarships.
