Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program

The Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program, a free, public on-campus lecture series, pays tribute to the renowned photographic artist and longtime CCA faculty member Larry Sultan, who passed away in 2009.

Each year this series brings to campus prominent photographers and artists working in photography-related media to give public presentations, critique student work, and participate in events and projects.

The Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program is copresented by California College of the Arts, Pier 24 Photography, and SFMOMA. Support for the program is provided by Robert Mailer Anderson, Jamie Lunder, Nion McEvoy, Pilara Foundation Black Dog Foundation, Randi and Bob Fisher and Jane and Larry Reed.

Access to Influential Artists

In addition to sponsoring a public lecture by each visiting artist, the program enables students in CCA’s Graduate Program in Fine Arts and undergraduate Photography Program to have invaluable personal contact with some of the most talented and influential artists currently working in the medium.

Together with the region’s many museums, galleries, and premier photography collections such as that of Pier 24 Photography, the program furthers the reputation of the San Francisco Bay Area as a rich context for the study of contemporary photographic production.

Larry Sultan Photography Award

In fall 2015, Headlands Center for the Arts, a multidisciplinary, international arts center located in the Marin Headlands, announced the inaugural Larry Sultan Photography Award. The award is issued in partnership with CCA, Pier 24 Photography, and SFMOMA, and includes a $10,000 cash prize and a four- to 10-week-long residency at Headlands.

The 2017 award recipient is Dutch photographer Awoiska van der Molen, who travels the world to capture landscapes unknown to her. Van der Molen prints large-scale images by hand that extend the tradition of landscape photography.

The 2015 award recipient was Marco Breuer, a German artist known for his radical approach to the photographic medium.

Visiting Artist Lecture Program Tie-In

The awardee is also selected to join other international artists, writers, and curators invited to participate in the annual Larry Sultan Visiting Artists Program.

As an affiliate artist in 1988-89, Sultan brought his boundary-pushing practice to the artist residency program at Headlands, where he worked alongside Ann Chamberlain, Jennifer Dowley, Leonard Hunter, and David Ireland in the early years of Headlands’ establishment.
